Janani Luwum, Primate of Uganda, was martyred today, 30 years ago. He would not compromise on Biblical truth and he paid the ultimate price. You can read more of his martyrdom here.
O God, by whose providence the blood of the martyrs is the seed Of the Church: Grant that we who remember before you blessed Janani, Archbishop and Martyr in Uganda, may, like him, be steadfast in our faith in Jesus Christ, to whom he gave obedience, even to death, and by his sacrifice brought forth a plentiful harvest; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Almighty God, who gave to your servant Janani Luwum and his Companions boldness to confess the Name of our Savior Jesus Christ before the rulers of this world, and courage to die for this faith: Grant that we may always be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in us, and to suffer gladly for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Thanks for commemorating ++Luwum. It’s my understanding that he is celebrated on Feb 17, because he was murdered on Feb 17 (Wikipedia + Episcopal Church lesser feasts & fasts). However, I had him on my calendar for Feb 16, like you. is there some confusion over which day he was murdered?

I think there is still confusion over the exact date of his death. Officially the “accident” in which he died was on the 17th but it’s now generally acknowledged that he was martyred on the 16th.
