Here at Christ Church we started a new sermon series after Easter looking at Biblical encounters with God and exploring what we can learn from them. Here’s the one I preached this morning on Elijah, and one from a fortnight ago on Jacob. Enjoy!

Thank you, Peter, for these thoughts on perseverance.With pentecost approaching, I’ve been looking at how one of the qualities the Holy Spirit gave the apostles was dogged determination. Question for you – “patience” or “long suffering” is listed as one of the fruits of the spirit in Galatians, in the original, can this have the meaning of an active perseverance or just the passive type?

No one could describe
the Word of the Father;
but when He took flesh from you, O Theotokos,
He consented to be described, and restored the fallen image to its former beauty.
We confess and proclaim our salvation in word and image.

John & Charles Wesley
God of mercy,
who inspired John and Charles Wesley with zeal for your gospel:
grant to all people boldness to proclaim your word
and a heart ever to rejoice in singing your praises;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
