Russell Brand on Newsnight
Russell Brand was on Newsnight on Wednesday evening and lots of people have been commenting on what he said. Lots of it has been quite laudatory, so one wonders what it was he shared that was so inspiring.
Have you got that?
- Brand wants a revolution
- He doesn’t believe this can be achieved by democracy
- He wants to install a socialist system by this revolution
So one wonders, given that Brand has rejected democracy how will he maintain this socialist system when people want to change? I know someone who can advise.
It is true that liberty is precious; so precious that it must be carefully rationed.
One man with a gun can control 100 without one.
We do not have time to play at “oppositions†at “conferences.†We will keep our political opponents… whether open or disguised as “nonparty,†in prison.
Seriously folks, if you support a man who wants to change the political system regardless of the democratic will of the people, you will get everything you deserve.
The Russell Brand interview struck me as more Jacque Fresco than Lenin ;-)
I don’t think that Brand is half as clever as he thinks he is. And he’s certainly not THAT clever.
Fresco, Lenin or Mussolini, Brand still has to tell us what he would do when people want a change from his utopia.

He’s erudite, witty, literary and completely wrong. Quite apart from the fact that his gender politics are awful (see here: http://www.thegrindstone.com/2012/08/03/office-politics/russell-brand-sexually-harassed-a-wardrobe-girl-but-dont-worry-it-was-funny-274/) he is also basically calling for fascism. Because if you tell right-minded people not to vote, that’s what you end up with.
It’s a shame because he correctly identifies many of the grinding inequalities that make our world so unjust.
Can I tell you how mightily relieved I am that you agree with me on this point.
That “Brand refused to proceed until a wardrobe girl showed him her boobs” story is a fabrication, according to Billy Connolly, as mentioned in the comments below the piece you link.

That was published a year ago, so I’m surprised the original claim still has currency.
Being honest, I can’t remember where I read it, so it could be a fabrication. Nevertheless, I wish he would stop flirting with everybody who interviews him!
I refrained from expressing an opinion on Brand, to avoid being banned under PO’s politeness policy.
Is he not a parody? He seems to be engaging in satire. Pretty funny!

I rather liked conservative commentator Iain Dale’s remarks (with which I heartily concur) – ‘Brand is someone who knows exactly how to generate self-publicity but precious little else. He’s a pisspoor actor, an unfunny comedian but is apparently a very good shag. If I never see him on TV again, it will be too soon.’

There are no doubt many drug addicts that are grateful for the friendship of Russell Brand, and it’s an achievement that he managed to clean himself up, but IMHO he should stick to what he’s good at, which is NOT politics, social action, behaving appropriately towards fellow employees of the opposite sex, acting or being funny.
