Amos the Prophet and Comedian

Along with others in the Church of England we’ve been reading Amos this week and have been enjoying the fact that Amos seems to be a humorist of the standard of Jack Dee. Take for example this classic from this morning’s reading of Amos 8 (all of it):

This is what the Sovereign LORD showed me: a basket of ripe fruit. “What do you see, Amos?” he asked.
“A basket of ripe fruit,” I answered.

Cue the whole room falling about uncontrollably for a few minutes. “This just in Amos, fire burns!!!”
