  1. Peter

Thanks for the competition! And as I live in the host country and will probably be going to a couple of the matches, I'll certainly be taking part. I should have an added advantage of 'local knowledge', shouldn't I? Do you want to offer a prize?

    • Fill in as much as you want to at this point. As long as a game hasn't been played you can come back and update your predictions as many times as you want.

  2. I've just saved my predications for today's opening games: SA 3 Mexico 2 and Uruguay 2 France 2. The atmosphere here is white hot with thousands of blaring vuvuzelas. I expect it to be quite initimidating for the players, so I'm expecting higher scoring matches than usual, at least until they get used to the type of atmosphere down here. So I'm going out on a limb with my first predictions! Anyone else want to follow?

    • I totally agree with you, tallandrew! From the Supersport website in South Africa today: 'The European scouts are likely to be knocking on Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung's door before the World Cup ends on July 11. Tshabalala is going to be one of Bafana's World Cup stars'. Amen to that, brother!

    • Korea v Greece – 6 pts for correct Korea win and 2 pts for correct Greece 0 goals

Argentina v Nigeria – 6pts for correct Argentina win and 2 pts for correct Nigeria 0 goals

      Comprendez?

  3. I see that, so far, the Scots are doing as well at this competition as we did in the real thing. At least we are represented………

    • lol! If Heskey had been able to hit a ban door then I would have earned a mighty ten points! On balance, I'm glad he didn't ;-).

And that Argentina game was one of the least likely 1-0s I've ever seen – after the first ten minutes, I thought I should have predicted a 6-0 victory!

      • What a surprise! Another England goalie error! What ever happened to the great English goalkeeping tradition of Banks and Shilton. 6 points dropped for me (well 5, at least I got the USA score correct)

  4. Peter, far be it from someone near the bottom of the table to turn down points, but I don't think I should have got 8 for my Uruguay prediction – the actual goal difference was +3, when I predicted +1!

  5. My heart said South Africa, my head said Uruguay… remind me never to listen to my heart ever again…

    • Trystan

Same here! Living in South Africa my heart well and truely overtook my head. It's a very deflated mood here this morning, as everyone knows that South Africa are almost certainly out of the WC. In truth, they were totally outclassed by Uruguay.

  6. cerebusboy – you got 6 points for the win and 2 bonus for getting the correct number of goals for South Africa (0).

  7. Ah, thanks! Plainly my ignorance of the rules is the explanation behind my shoddy performance thus far ;-)

Glad to see Argentina lived up to the goal-fest predictions!

  8. The Slovenia-USA game is at 3pm UK time, isn't it? If Peter isn't about to correct it, the predictions are going to get messed up.

  9. I have the sad duty to inform everyone that many Scots are rejoicing and that sports shops are stocking up on on Slovenia tops for Wednesday's match.

  10. I think one's England predictions are more in hope than reality. My next one is. I do hope eventually to get out of the relegation zone in this competition despite joining the 'fun' several matches later than you all.

  11. Praying for your treatment Peter. What is the diagnosis? I have twice had heart failure, one due to hypertension next atrial fibrillation. England are enough to give any one heart failure.

    • I have an arrhytmia (Ventricual Bigeminy) with an inverted T wave (so the electrical pulse in my heart is not repolarising at the end as it should do). I'm currently on Calcium Channel blockers to try and stabilise the rhythm. I'm not in any great heart attack risk, but when I get a funny turn it has to be checked out just in case.

  12. Thanks for setting this up Peter, ("Heavenly Father, please heal Peter and be with his family. Amen") I didn't expect to get off to a great start with several dud predictions, including against my own team. (Aus) My tip is just to follow your heart, be who you wanna be, etc etc.
