  1. I think he should have closed the box when he put in the phone hand piece. Not sure, but my memory is that he should have.

    Never used on with such a pretty box, but I do remember 300 baud and even 1200 baud boxes. Back then Ma Bell did not want you to attach to her wires.

  2. You're right Scott. The cuffs one the acoustic modems did not always block out the ambient noise in the
    room. I remember putting a plastic dishpan over my modem to muffle household sounds and avoid the problem of random letters appearing in my text stream.

    (25 years in the computer industry teaches one a lot that becomes obsolete within 10 years of learning it. And I retired almost 10 years ago.)
